This remarkable video of Mimi a cat who rescued and then took care of a baby squirrel was taken by Mary Cummins. The event inspired Mary to become a fierce advocate of animal rescue saving many wild and injured animals and setting them free back into the wild.

Living in Los Angeles, California she set up Animal Advocates, a not for profit organisation. #AnimalAdvocates say:

Mary Cummins and Animal Advocates work with local city and private animal shelters, schools, private groups and other rescue organizations to rescue and rehabilitate wild animals. Mary Cummins and Animal Advocates are permitted by the California Department of Fish & Game and USDA. Animal Advocates specializes in coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, opossums, raccoons, skunks, squirrels, moles, voles, gophers, wild mice, wild rats and bats.

They also stress that “a squirrel’s real mom is always the best mom”. If you find a baby squirrel on its own you should do everything you can to reunite the baby with its natural mother before trying to look after it yourself.
